Episode 181: Internships: Building a Sustainable, High-Impact Program for the Future of the Church

In today’s episode, we’re diving deep into the world of church internships. We’ll explore how to build a sustainable, high-impact program that equips young people for a lifetime of service.

Show Notes:

  • When you’re trying to decide on or build an internship program, consider holistic growth intentionally. Everything from spiritual growth, to leadership opportunities, to development. Also, try to create opportunities across every area of ministry in your church, not just the ones that are more common like children’s ministry or youth ministry. It can also be beneficial to give exposure to a broad range of ministry experiences (even beyond the one that an intern is specializing in). They may spend a week with the worship ministry or operations team even though they are interning with the kids ministry.
  • Intentionality is key in ministry internship programs, focusing on both spiritual development and practical tasks.
  • Understanding the gifts and skills of interns and placing them in appropriate ministry areas is crucial for their success.
  • Feedback and open communication with interns is important for adjusting and improving internship programs.
  • Short-term internships that only focus on grunt work or intellectual development do not provide an accurate picture of ministry.
  • Proper training and oversight are necessary to ensure interns are equipped to lead and serve effectively. Internship programs should focus on the individual and their personal growth, rather than just completing tasks.
  • The question of whether internships should be paid or unpaid depends on the context and the stage of life of the intern.
  • Calling in ministry can be discovered through experiential learning and mentorship.
  • When a person decides that ministry is not for them, it is important to continue supporting them and maintaining a relationship, especially if they remain part of the church community.
  • To start or refresh an internship program, create a budget to support interns and establish a game plan for intentional mentorship.
  • Building a team of people to support and mentor interns is crucial for the success of the program.
  • For individuals seeking internships, reach out to people in ministry and ask for recommendations and opportunities.
  • Community and relationships are essential in the internship process, both for interns and those leading the program.
